In the Shasta Cascade Region, vast tracks of public lands are easily accessible and offer some of California’s greatest national treasures. The region is known for its wild and scenic rivers, three major lakes offering the best houseboating in the world, and thousands of square miles of open spaces providing great opportunities for hiking, rafting or kayaking, fishing, camping, or just getting away from the “maddening” crowd. It is the only national park in the contiguous 48 states containing a volcano which has erupted in the twentieth century (as Mt. St. Helens is a "Volcanic National Monument").
